One memory in particular comes to mind. I was working at retail store, let’s call it Ceramics Ranch, and a woman walked in who I greeted. She had on these really beautiful peacock feather earrings — I’ve since seen them dozens of times, but at the time they were pretty novel. I complimented them, maybe gushed a little bit — and in one fluid movement, she unhooked them from her ears and handed them to me.

“Here,” she said, “take them.”

My eyes widened, I couldn’t believe a perfect stranger would just give me something of hers because I admired them! “Are you sure?” I asked hesitantly. I didn’t really think it was kosher to accept something from a potential customer while on duty.

“Of course,” she replied simply, and walked away.

The unexpected generosity of that simple exchange has stayed with me today. I still have the earrings.
