Interview

What kind of music are you into?

If if would make a good karaoke pick, I probably love it. Yacht rock and power ballads from the eighties rank high, a top favorite including Because the Night by Patti Smith ... I weep whenever I hear Yann Teirson's Comptine d'un Autre été (oh, E minor, how you move me!) ... The jazz divas, such as Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald make my soul pitter patter, as well as the more contemporary Amy Winehouse and Carise Blanton

Do you party?

I love my party girls, but I am not one of them. To me, glamour is a full nine hours sleep waking dewey eyed in the morning, ready for my yoga or Pilates practice. I don’t consider myself a health nut, I just like making healthy choices for myself, and am pretty particular about what I put into and how I treat my body.

Do you prefer people shoot straight with you or temper their words?

My personal style is a combination of the two. I lean towards a no-bullshit approach, I find it’s easier to communicate honestly that way, but I also don’t think bluntness is an excuse for rudeness, so I try to be mindful about how I’m speaking or writing without compromising what I’m saying.

What is on the walls of the room you are in?

Some pieces by a couple different artists I’ve started collecting. Next on my list is Hayv Kahraman, although I’m not sure she’ll go in the kitchen, where I’m writing this.

What messages or myths about sex did you believe growing up?

Oh gosh, too many. I think sex education is woefully underfunded. The most detrimental beliefs I had that I think many people have throughout their life is that sex is to be orgasm focused. I actually wrote a blog entry about this, but in summary I would like to see a lot less ego involved in sex – or as a first step, an awareness of when ego is at play in one’s sex life.

Do you have any allergies?

Oh boy! Pull up a chair. While I am very lucky enough not to have any anaphylactic allergies, I do have a fair amount of fairly severe skin and food sensitivities. I actually carry around business cards with them all printed out (waitstaff is always grateful!), but the highlights are gluten and alliums, which is mildly devastating since my favorite snack pre-diagnosis was oven roasted garlic smeared on freshly baked bread. Most common brands of soaps and mouthwash also cause discomfort, but don’t worry, I come bearing Marla-friendly toiletries!

If you could change anything about your life, would you?

Honestly, I wouldn't. I adore my life. This is in part because I believe in and try to practice not procrastinating changes I can make to my life, so anytime I want something different, if it’s within my control to do so, I make that change. If it’s not in my control, then there’s little sense in stressing about it!

At what store would you max our your credit card?

Oh my, I would never do that! My credit score is over 800 and I’m weirdly proud of that. I could probably moonlight as a credit score advisor, I became obsessed with achieving excellent credit in college after a very enlightening course. Now if some generous suitor were to offer up him limitless card, I could happily do some damage at some combination of Bergdorf and my local bookstore.

What is one thing you’d rather pay someone to do than do yourself?

You can’t take it with you, so I pay people to do a lot of things that I’d rather not do myself. Clean my home, cook my meals, blow dry my hair, I even have a personal yoga instructor come to my house in the mornings and basically do my yoga for me – love me my adjustments! Paying for these services is a luxury and therefore a pleasure, and as a hedonist maximum pleasure is my goal.

What is an ideal first date for you?

Whatever is it, it always ends with us planning our second date!
